Examples of houses built of logs in Australia are few and far between and a curiosity in Australia, but is common to the forest dwelling northern Europeans in Sweden, Norway and close Scandanavian countries. who had ready access to straight and tall coniferous trees such as Pine and Spruce. The first log structures were reputably built in Northern Europe in the Bronze Age, the practice coming later becoming firmly established in Germany, Ukraine and Northern Russia and then later in the mountainous regions of North America as the west was settled in the USA. About 20km north of Bendigo, is an 8ha property that has been established as a horse haven. The house was built about 17 years ago by a couple who handpicked and debarked every log, then lived here for 9 years. They then decided to buy a Winnebago to travel around Australia, but because this place was so unique, they did not want to rent it out and the vendor purchased the property 6 ½ years ago. While living in Gippsland and was looking on the internet one night for unique homes. Not knowing Neilborough and they fell madly in love with it as the place just has such personality. People still stop out the front to take photos. The cabin has 2 bedrooms, one upstairs and the master downstairs, study, open plan lounge, dining and a kitchen equipped with a $7,500 Aga stove with two elec ovens (one fan forced), gas cooktop and a Stanley slow combustion stove. There is an open fireplace and the bathroom has a claw foot bath with shower, timber raked ceilings, exposed beams in an intricate log pattern. A mirrard of grand logs, craftsmanship, golden hew of native timber walls and ceilings all add to the earthy ambience of the home. Timber stair case to the second bedroom and study nook. This property has it all quality equine infrastructure, excellent shedding, great fencing and a timber log cabin that comes from the mountains of Norway or Arizona. There’s a cellar, which is a former concrete water tank under the house. The owners used to go down there on hot days and read a book. The red bricks on the handmade floor come from an early settlers cottage in Kamarooka you can even see the dog prints in some of them – in keeping with the early settlers theme, the flush toilet has the cast iron cistern and chain pull handle adjacent to the laundry with its dual concrete wash troughs and hand wringer with gable roofs lined. As far as the house is concerned modern conveniences are discretely hidden, so when you come in it feels like walking back in time. Outside there’s an all weather sand area, large loose boxes in each paddock each with its own 9000L water tank, hardwood post and rail fences with stand off hot wires, 6m x 8m tack room/feed shed and hitching rails for 5 horses. Riding trails head off in every direction. The property has a reliable dam, 5 water tanks totaling 40,000l and 20 x 1000l containers. There’s also a large garden shed, double garage and hay machinery shed with power and concrete floor. The machinery shed is suitable for horse float storage and the road has good access for gooseneck trailers & trucks.
