THE CLARK RANGE – Eastern Australia | North Queensland
• Due to the endemic Clarke’s profound beauty, it attracts visitors from all over the world; a calling to visit the iconic world renowned, Eungella National Park, where the longest stretch of unbroken tropical rainforest stands proud. The National Park is located just over 80km west of Mackay. The road from Mackay, one of Queensland’s leading eastern coastal townships, will guide you through the famous Pioneer Valley to the bottom of the Eungella Range. While driving the majestic incline up, waterfalls cascade the mountainside, enticing visitors to reach the top to the Pinnacles of the Pioneer Valley.
• There is two Eungella’s in Australia both in the highlands. It means Lands of the Drifting Clouds in indigenous language and consequently if conditions are right, clouds settle lower than the mountaintops. The magnificent sensation of standing above the clouds is breath-taking. Walkabout.
• The designated viewing lookouts on The Clarke parade paramount views. The most visited The Chalet Eungella in the heart of the Township, showing off the shear drop to the famous Pioneer Valley below. On flawless days, you can just see the end of the sky, and the distant land to the sea.
• Remaining the longest preserved stretch of tropical rainforest in Australia, walking the Australian National Park hiking tracks exposes another world, each feeling like you are on a pilgrimage, stretching from Eungella Township south to Broken River then onto Crediton, passing the historic hall and camping area, and beyond and back.
• There are several entrances for shorter walks by following directions available at the National Park hub, Broken River Information Centre a 20-minute drive from Eungella township, where there is a café, multiple areas for camping, and the eco-Broken River Mountain Resort. This is where you can see platypus swimming freely in the wild and the beautiful river flows.
• Eungella Dam, a scenic water storage waterway built by Pioneers in the 1960s is also popular for camping and water sports including stocks of fish for anglers. One fish stock is a prized catch.
• The Diggings turn off on the way to Broken River also has a vehicle tourist track where there is spectacular camping, and new kids on the block Eden Hills Café, with accommodation and camping. This is where the Rainforest trees meet the Eucalypts and you might spot a koala or two.
• Or, back at Eungella Township a drive north to the end of the road to Dalrymple Heights there is a National Park hiking track specially created and managed to reach Mt Dalrymple elevated 1259 metres above sea level, being the second highest peak in Queensland. The views are spectacular and enlivening. That feeling of being on top of the world.
